5 December International Volunteer Day
International Volunteer Day programs (IVD) is an initiative of the UN. It started in 1985 ,
And is celebrated throughout the world on December 5 every year.
Even though the United Nations multilateral volunteer programme (UNV) coordinated through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been in operation in since 1970, only in December 1985 the UN General Assembly resolved to recommend to all governments, social groups and even individuals to celebrate IVD annually, as a well deserved tribute to volunteerism: one of the most worthy philosophies of life. The UNV has by now become one of the foremost suppliers of middle and upper level specialist professional volunteers to over one hundred developing countries in the world. And its highly motivated men and women of all ages and nationalities.
IVD offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make their contributions -- at local, national and international levels -- visible. And, it is but appropriate for all of us to join together in tribute in order to encourage, promote and consolidate volunteerism and preserve its ideals and traditions.
